North Sentinel Island is one of the many island in the Andaman Islands located in the Bay of Bengal.  The Sentinelese as they are called are known to be among the first group of Africans to have left African continent 60,000 years ago.

They have never come in contact with Europeans and have not been colonized in any form. Life in the island was first noticed in 1771 when British Surveyor John Richie noticed a light on the islands while doing his work with the East Indian Company but didn't stop to attack or inquire,and the island was not talked about until 1867 when the Indian merchant ship called The NINEVAH wretched on its shores and the more than 100 passengers who survived were attacked few days later by the Sentinelese. The captain manage to escape with a boat to search for help and later returned to rescue others who managed to survive.

The officer in charge of the colony of Andaman Island Maurice Vidal Portman led an expenditure to the island and captured some aboriginals (natives people) of the island and took them back to Port Blair, shortly after arriving at the Port city they became ill due to the fact that they have not been exposed to the rest of the world germs in almost sixty thousand years, they returned them back to the island after the two eldest of the Sentinelese died from an illness.

It was in the 1960s that most Anthropologist decided to study the island and it's people, an Indian anthropologist Triloknath Pandit landed on the island in 1967 but was lucky to meet any inhabitants in a hut he discovered so he just dropped some presents and left the island, and a few years later the island was visited by another anthropologist but this time they were welcomed with hostility and they fled to the south of the island which they later left entirely because they were being chased.
In 1981, a ship crashed in the island and the crew were happy to have seen land but soon afterwards they were attacked by the Sentinelese with bow and spears, they sent out a distress call immediately and fought off the natives with axes and flareguns and they were rescued by the Indian Navy. Few years later the Indian government decided to stop further studies into the island for the fear of extermination of the tribe or spread of germs to the islands population who are not immune to it.

  • North Sentinel Island is by law a legal part of the Indian Union of Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Indian government backed away after failed attempts to make contacts with the Sentinelese.
  • The Sentinelese have full sovereignty over their lands and affairs.
  • King Leopold of Belgium expendition to the island was cut short when he was attacked by a single Sentinelese on getting to the island.
  • They had friendly encounter in 1991 and it was led by Pandit who offered them coconut and they accepted it wholeheartedly. 
  • Two fishermen that were drunk got killed when their boat sailed toward the island. 
  • The most recent incident was when a US Missionary John Allen Chau was killed by the Sentinelese on 25th November 2018, when he landed on the island to convert the people to Christianity.
